New York Knicks Trade Rumors: Knicks interested in Wolves’ Ricky Rubio
The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in trading for Ricky Rubio.
Although the Knicks already have three point guards with Jose Calderon, Langston Galloway and Jerian Grant, Phil Jackson, who is the president of basketball operations, is reportedly not sold on this trio. The Knicks, according to Gigantes Del Basket (reported by Daily Knicks), are looking at 24-year-old Rubio.
The report added that even though the Knicks are eyeing Rubio, he is still under contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves until 2019. A trade right now would most likely not happen. However, if Rubio does not get off to a good start this upcoming season, the Wolves could trade him.
If that scenario does happen, the Wolves will most likely make a trade that involves veteran Calderon, who is due $15 million over the next two seasons. In comparison, Rubio will be playing in the first year of his four-year, $55 million contract.
Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reported that the Timberwolves have been inpatient with Rubio's production level and could seriously consider trading him before the winter deadline. Rubio is a great playmaker who has yet to refine his shooting skills. Rubio averaged 10.3 points, 8.8 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 22 games this past season. He only shot 35.6 percent from the field and 25.5 percent from the three-point line.
In New York, he could feed star Carmelo Anthony and boost the Knicks' assist numbers. They were 19th in assists per game last season.
If the Knicks want to add a guard now, they could also look into option of trading for Mario Chalmers, who is reportedly being shopped around. Chalmers is a two-time NBA Champion with the Miami Heat when the Heat had the LeBron James - Dwyane Wade - Chris Bosh trio.
The Knicks could also consider looking at Norris Cole and Brandon Jennings.
