New York Mets Rumors: Jose Reyes Says he would like to Finish his Career as a Met
Will the New York Mets grant fans' wishes by bringing back Jose Reyes?
Reyes, who was the shortstop for the Mets from 2007 to 2011, has voiced his desire to finish his career in New York. The 32-year-old four-time All-Star reflected on his most recent trade from a playoff-contending team, the Toronto Blue Jays to the Colorado Rockies.
"You know, when I heard the news, I was sleeping in my bed," Reyes said. "When they said they traded me, I said, 'Where'd I go?' You know, I was a little bit down when I heard the news. Because I'm at the point in my career where I want to compete. I want to win. I'm 32 years old. I've been in this game a long time. I wasn't able to win anything. I've only been in the playoffs once, 2006. But I'm an employee. Wherever they send me, I have to perform and play."
Reyes added that trades no longer surprise him, especially after the Miami Marlins sent him to the Blue Jays after just one year. The Marlins had signed Reyes to a six-year, $106 million contract and promised that they would not be trading him.
"In the beginning when I signed with Miami, they said they were never gonna trade me, and then, after first year, boom, they traded me to Toronto," Reyes said. "So from now on, in baseball, nothing surprises me. I understand this is a business."
The Rockies (47-64) are currently last in the NL West. Although the Rockies are not headed to the postseason, Reyes is hoping that next year will be better.
"Next year, we should be better," Reyes said. "I don't want to play on last place teams forever. Someday I'm gonna retire, and when I go home, what am I going to say? I played for what? Playing competitive games every day, that's what I play for."
Reyes, who still has two years left on his contract, hopes to finish out his career in New York.
"I'd love to," Reyes told The New York Times when asked if he would want to play with the Mets again. "Not now, because I have two more years on my deal. But I'd love to finish my career here in New York. I have some great memories here."
Reyes' previous two teams, the Mets and the Blue Jays are currently in playoff contention.
