Cleveland Cavaliers Rumors: Timofey Mozgov will not sign Contract Extension

Timofey Mozgov is reportedly not interested in signing a contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to Terry Pluto of Cleveland's The Plain Dealer, the 29-year-old Russian, who is making almost $5 million this year, will wait for the salary cap to increase before signing a new deal.

Pluto wrote:

"In four years, the salary cap may double. It's expected to rise about 30 percent in 2016, what I've called 'The Money Summer.' That's why Mozgov won't sign an extension right now. He'll play for $4.9 million and another solid season for the 7-footer could be worth more than $15 million a year in 2016. As a few agents have explained to me, 'A max contract now immediately becomes 30 percent less than the max by next summer. In 2-3 years, it's not anywhere close to the max.'"

Even though Pluto's report makes an interesting argument against signing a contract extension, Bobby Marks, the former Nets assistant general manager, noted that Mozgov would not be able to sign one even if he had wanted to.

Marks also tweeted that Mozgov could earn more than $13 million a year if he is as impressive this year as he was last season. No one on the Cavaliers roster is eligible to sign a contract extension this summer.

Mozgov joined the Cavaliers mid season from the Denver Nuggets. In 46 games, 45 of which were starts, he averaged 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds. In the postseason, Mozgov averaged 10.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks over 20 games.

The Cavaliers are now working on resigning center Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith. They have already signed Kevin Love, LeBron James, Iman Shumpert, James Jones and Mo Williams.
