NY Giants Rumors: Eli Manning finalizing a new contract?
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who has an expiring contract, is expected to finalize a new contract over the next few weeks.
"This is another one where the Giants hope to do a deal either before training camp or early on in training camp," Ian Rapoport said on NFL Network. "My understanding is the Giants brass is confident in doing a deal in due time. Actually, just talking to people on both sides of this, it seems to make sense for both sides to do a deal, one that they think and hope will get done this year."
Manning's agent, Tom Condon, also said that a deal would be done at the "appropriate time."
It is very unlikely that a franchise quarterback will change teams. The 34-year-old has been with the Giants his entire career. He was drafted first overall in 2004.
The New York Post reported:
"The Giants are committed to Manning, and he to them, and there is every reason to believe a new deal will get done. It even could be announced on July 30, the day Manning reports for his 12th NFL training camp with the Giants. Figuring out the numbers for Manning should not be extremely difficult - the going rate for franchise quarterbacks is in the $20-million-per-year range. "
Manning is set to make $17 million for this upcoming season, which is the second-highest pay day for all quarterbacks after the New Orleans' Saints Drew Brees.
Manning will most likely be seeking a large and final contract, which could fall in between Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger and Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rogers contracts.
Roethlisberger agreed to a five-year, $99 million deal with $60.75 in guaranteed money. Rodgers signed a five-year, $110 million contract with $54 million guaranteed.
