Johnny Depp's Wife Amber Heard Charged For Alleged Smuggling Their Two Dogs From Australia
Johnny Depp's wife, Amber Heard is currently facing two charges in Australian court. The charges include alleged importing of the couple's terriers without proper permission and for providing false documents.
According to BBC, the US actress was apprehended by the law for failing to acknowledge to local authorities the Yorkshire terriers Pistol and Boo when they arrived in Brisbane while Depp is filming the new Pirates of the Caribbean.
The dogs, however, were transported back to the US days after the authorities' notice.
"It's time Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States," agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce said in an interview.
Illegal importation may have a penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $102,000. Presenting of false documents such as that of an incoming passenger card, on the other hand, may lead to one year in prison and a fine of $10,200, The Australian said.
In an interview, Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce said that their government would not give special treatment for the Hollywood actress' case further expressing that he does not care whether the case would make them look mean.
"No, it's not. The law is the same for everybody. There is no preferential treatment here. You come into our nation, you have to abide (by) biosecurity protocols," he said in an interview at Perth.
Joyce further said that the strict implementation of importation laws is due to the fear of rabies that may not only affect people but other animals in the ecosystem, Business Insider said.
"It's not just the people on the streets that would be affected, if that got out into the general wild dog population in Australia, which is massive, it would have devastating effects," he said.
"It's also a pathogen that could make its way into the bat population, and how many towns do you know that have a bat colony smack bang, unfortunately, in the middle of town? We've got enough problems with them, let along if they became rabid."
Amber Heard is scheduled to appear in a Queensland court on September 7.
