Young Woman 'Eats Herself to Death' at Home Facility
Kirsty Deryy, a young Englishwoman has died from overeating and officials believe her death may have been a result of failing to treat her for her unusual eating disorder.
Derry had been living in an assisted living home where the staff had placed alarms on the refrigerators and cupboards to prevent her from overeating.
However, they decided to remove the alarms and seven months later, Derry died at the age of 23.
"Of course I wanted her to stay at home with me, it's a mother's instinct-but I wanted her to be happy and have what she wanted," her mother, 50-year-old Julie Fallows, said at an inquest into her daughter's death. "I thought she'd be safe and happy in a supported living environment."
Derry was diagnosed with the rare medical condition Prader Willi Syndrome at the age of 2 which is said to give the patient a constantly strong appetite.
She was admitted to Victoria Mews, an assisted living facility a few years back after developing diabetes. The staff removed the alarms for certain periods when Deryy started complaining.
Soon the weight of the 4 foot 8 inch woman ballooned from 175 pounds to 266 pounds as she kept eating foods like chocolates and ice cream.
The official cause of her death was pulmonary edema.
"Hopefully appropriate lessons have been learned," says a coroner who concluded her that her condition was not properly addressed."
The facility has since been shut down.
