NBA Free Agency: DeAndre Jordan set to Sign with the Dallas Mavericks
Free agent DeAndre Jordan has agreed to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, league sources reported. The contract will be four years worth $80 million with a player option after the third year.
Sources believe that Jordan picked the Mavericks over his previous team, the Los Angeles Clippers, in order to become a franchise player. Rumors claimed that Jordan felt underappreciated being in the third spot after Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Jordan would also be returning to Texas where he played college ball.
"We think he is going to be our best player for years to come," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "A franchise player for the rest of his career."
The center will be a huge addition to the Mavericks. Jordan is a dominant defensive player who averaged 15 rebounds and 2.2 blocks. During the postseason, he averaged 13.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks.
Jordan reportedly met with the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers as well.
The Mavericks and free agent guard Wesley Matthews also agreed to a four-year deal worth $13 million.
Current Mavericks player, Chandler Parsons, was very active in recruiting Jordan and Matthews. Dirk Nowitzi, Cuban, head coach Rick Carlisle, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson and athletic trainer Casey Smith all helped seal the deal.
Teams can officially sign free agents on July 9 when the free agency moratorium is lifted.
