Oscar Pistorius'  brother Carl was badly injured in a car accident Friday in South Africa, reports the Associated Press.

The brothers' uncle Arnold Pistorius, said he was involved in a head collision on a highway in the northern part of the country. His condition was described as serious but stable and he has been shifted to a hospital in Pretoria.

"Carl's vehicle was hit head-on by another car that had swerved from the opposite side of the highway into the oncoming traffic," Arnold Pistorius said in a statement Saturday without giving details of Carl's injuries, reports AP.

Carl Pistorius was returning from a business trip from Polokwane, about 260 kilometers  north of Pretoria and a colleague, who witnessed the accident, was following him in a different car.

Carl has suffered numerous fractures in the collision and is in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Policemen who arrived at the scene said that both the cars were badly damaged in the collision. Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, police spokesman, said : "Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be removed by emergency services using the jaws of life, " reports The Telegraph.

Last year Carl Pistorius was acquitted of a culpable homicide charge involving the death of a female motorcyclist. He crashed into her bike in 2008 and she later died of the injuries.

Oscar Pistorius, Carl's brother and the famed paralympian, is facing murder charges  in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkampof, in February last year.
