Donald Trump’s Miss USA Pageant Picked up by REELZ
The show must go on.
Donald Trump's Miss USA Pageant was picked up by the REELZ channel after NBC and Univision dropped it due to Trump's racist remarks about immigration.
The pageant will be aired live from Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 12 at 8 p.m. on the independent cable network, REELZ, the CEO Stan E. Hubbard announced.
"The decision on the part of REELZ to acquire the rights to the Miss USA pageant was based on our belief that this special event, and the women who compete in it, are an integral part of American tradition," Hubbard said. "As one of only a few independent networks, we decided to exercise our own voice and committed ourselves to bringing this pageant to American viewers everywhere. For us, this decision is about the dreams of the contestants who come from all walks of life across the United States, the city of Baton Rouge that has proudly come together to host this pageant and the viewers who will be watching and celebrating its 54th year on television."
Trump got himself into deep waters when he made comments about Mexican immigrants during his presidential bid.
"The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems...When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people," Trump said.
Since he made those comments, Univision decided to cut ties with Trump. The Spanish-language network released a statement that read:
"At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country."
Trump filed a $500 million lawsuit against Univision that claimed the network breached their contract. The network has responded, calling the lawsuit "both factually false and legally ridiculous."
Performers J Balvin and Flo Rida decided to cancel their performances for the pageant. Judges Emmitt Smith and Jonathan Scott also distanced themselves from the pageant. American co-hosts Cheryl Burke and Thomas Roberts and co-hosts for Univision, Roselyn Sánchez and Cristián De La Fuente, have dropped out of the pageant as well.
NBC ended their business relationship with Trump.
The network released a statement that read, "At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC. In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in The Celebrity Apprentice on NBC. Celebrity Apprentice is licensed from Mark Burnett's United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue."
The pageant will also be streamed live on its website.
