NBA Free Agency Rumors: Boston Celtics No Longer Pursuing Tobias Harris, Corey Brewer
The Boston Celtics are reportedly no longer interested in signing free agents Tobias Harris and Corey Brewer, Steven Bulpett of the Boston Herald first reported late Wednesday night.
Bulpett cited "sources from other teams and within the player rep community" that after Boston signed three free agents, including Jonas Jerebko and Jae Crowder, who played for the Celtics this past season, they will no longer pursue forward Harris and guard Brewer.
The third free agent that Boston signed was Amir Johnson, forward from Toronto Raptors. That contract is reportedly worth $24 million for two years.
The Celtics ended talks with Harris after finding out that the Orlando Magic were willing to match any deal offered to him. The Magic want to keep Harris in Orlando especially after they failed to sign Paul Millsap.
"The Celts had a certain financial parameter in mind for Harris, and when it became clear that Orlando was willing to pay big to match any offer for the restricted free agent, they were out of the running," Bulpett wrote.
Harris averaged 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds in 34.8 minutes.
On the Brewer front, however, the Celtics reportedly lost interest after they resigned Crowder to a five-year, $35 million deal with no opt-outs. The Celtics also had active talks with Kevin Love before he decided to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
"I'm told Danny (Ainge) had some very good talks with Kevin and his people, but at the end of the day, if you miss by an inch or miss by a mile, the result's still the same," a source said reported by Bulpett.
All contracts can only be officially signed starting on July 9.
