Facebook Photo App Not Launching In Europe Due To Privacy Concerns
Sorry Europeans, Facebook's Moments app is not launching for you.
Facebook's brand new app is aimed to make its users reconnect with memories that they might have forgotten from the last years. The app searches the camera roll of one user for pictures of another user, in order to resurface pictures that would be of interest to both.
The app uses leverages facial recognition to identify the face of a user among the pictures of another user. The fact that the app uses facial recognition is the prime reason for it not being launched in Europe. The European Union frowns upon the facial recognition technology which constitutes the baseline of the Moments app.
"Regulators have told us we have to offer an opt-in choice to people to do this. We don't have an opt-in mechanism so it is turned off until we develop one," said Richard Allan, company's head of policy in Europe.
He further claimed to have no idea as to when Facebook would develop the opt-in feature to be able to launch the service across Europe, as he concluded.
