Apple has quietly removed the original iPad mini from its online store today, according to reports. The first-gen iPad mini was released in 2012.

The original iPad mini was introduced at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model, and eventually the price was dropped to $299 in October 2014

In the current lineup, now all iPads sport retina display. In Apple's marketing, "retina" refers to the theory that human eyes cannot distinguish individual pixels on "retina displays" at normal viewing distance. The 64-bit support across the iPad range would allow developers to take advantage over newer hardware when designing apps and games.

The upcoming version of iOS, iOS 9, allows developers to restrict their apps to only run on 64-bit devices. iPhone 5C remains the only iOS device in company's current lineup that doesn't have 64-bit support.

Notably, iOS 9 will extend support to the original iPad mini which means that the existing users can continue to enjoy it.
