Following iOS devices, the fingerprint scanning may soon be launching on Android devices, recent reports suggest.

According to BuzzFeed News, the search giant will introduce native fingerprint authentication in the upcoming version of Android, Android M. The new version of Android is expected to launch at the upcoming company's I/O conference.

"The new functionality will allow users to log in to all of the supported applications on their Android devices without entering a password. Google is expected to announce the feature next week during a keynote at Google I/O, the search giant's annual developer conference, in San Francisco," BuzzFeed noted.

Security is often touted as the main reason for implementing the technology, but it's hard to ignore the convenience aspect. Placing your finger on a dedicated sensor to unlock an application or device is much faster than having to remember and manage complicated passwords; assuming you use one, Fortune notes.

Reportedly, Google would implement a system similar to used by Apple where "mathematical representation of your fingerprint" is stored on a chip, unaccessible to apps and other parts of operating system.
