Miami Marlins Appoint Dan Jennings as New Manager

Miami Marlins general manager Dan Jennings will be announced as the team's next manager, MLB Insider Jon Heyman with CBSSports.com first reported.

"We haven't played to our capabilities," president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. "We're hopeful that a new voice will spark and motivate our guys."

He added, "We're looking for that consistency. We're swinging the bat well at times, but not when we need to do it. We're pitching well at times, but not when we need to do it. I think the solution is in that clubhouse."

Jennings will take over for Mike Redmond, who the Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria fired after the team got off to a 16-22 start. The team also fired bench coach Rob Leary. The Marlins were just swept by the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series.

"I feel bad for them," reliever Steve Cishek said of his former manager and bench coach. "It's not their fault."

It is unclear whether or not the Marlins will be looking for a new general manager.

Jennings has been the Marlin's general manager since 2013 but joined the organization in 2002, when he held the vice president of player personnel position. Jennings has limited experience coaching baseball. He coached at a high school in Mobile, Alabama but has never coached on a professional level.

Prior to the Marlins, Jennings was a talent evaluator for the majority of his career and worked with several MLB teams, such as the Cincinnati Reds and the Tampa Bay Rays. While with the Rays, he was responsible for picking Josh Hamilton, Carl Crawford, James Shields and other players who had a huge impact in the big leagues.

In 2012, Jennings was selected to the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame.

The Marlins will host a news conference around 11 a.m. ET.
