In a recent report by the United Nations and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the number of people displaced by conflicts has reached as high as thirty eight million, which is equivalent to the population of a metropolitan city.

The report was prepared by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, a unit of the Norwegian Refugee Council, and was presented by England along with Volker Turk, the deputy head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in Geneva.

Jan Egeland said, "Global diplomats, UN resolutions, peace talks and cease fire agreements have lost the battle against ruthless armed men who are driven by political or religious interests rather than human imperatives".

Around eleven million people were forced out of their homes by violence last year. The report also indicated that for the third consecutive year, the internal displacement figures have reached such astonishing figures.

The Former UN secretary general for Humanitarian Affairs said, "This report should be a tremendous wake-up call. We must break this trend where millions of men, women and children are becoming trapped in conflict zones around the world".

Volker Turk, the deputy head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said, "The trend makes internally displaced people feel even more insecure and hopeless, thus pushing them to cross borders and become refugees".
