Dropbox is adding a social layer to its service by allowing users to comment on shared contents.

The feature, first available in March as part of the company's early access program, is free for all: Basic, Pro, and Dropbox for Business users.

According to Dropbox, the comments can be used for feedback as well as collaboration.

For leveraging the new feature, all you need to do is click on a shared link or open a file through the Dropbox website and type a message in the new comments pane. The feature is also coming to mobile, however, the company did not reveal the exact timing and it simply said 'soon.'

Anyone with access to the link - inside or outside your team - can comment.

Expectedly, you can mention a users by prefixing @, similar to comments in Facebook and mentions feature in Twitter.

When you mention someone, Dropbox will notify that user via an email, which can be opted out as well.

The feature works well for users who are not native Dropbox users as well. You can simply invite anyone into the conversation so they can see the file and its comments.

While this is all on by default, users can "Turn off comments" in the Options menu to disable comments on any file.
