Sony has announced its new smartphone, the Xperia Z4, but has said that it will initially only be available in Japan.

Going by the specs, the Android phone is only a minor improvement upon its predecessor, the Z3. Sony said the phone is thinner and lighter, and boasts improved specs.

Xperia Z4 will be released in summer and will be on display in Japan this week.

The smartphone has the same 5.2-inch 1080p IPS LCD display, 3GB of RAM, MicroSD, waterproof housing and 20.7MP rear camera. The front camera, however, has been upgraded to a 5.5MP sensor with a 25mm wide-angle lens (same as the rear) and image stabilization.

The Xperia Z4 sports a slightly smaller battery, which has a capacity of 2930 mAh instead 3000 mAh on the Z3.

The Xperia Z4 is water and dust-proof.
