NFL Rumors: The Bucs Going with Marcus Mariota?
If ESPN.com's analyst Ron Jaworski is correct, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to use their number one pick on Marcus Mariota in the upcoming 2015 NFL draft.
"The latest I'm hearing now from my sources around the league, who are pretty wired in, is that he's [Mariota] going to go number one now to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Jaworski told CSN's Philly Sports Talk. "Mariota's stock, remember it was quiet for a while? And there's a reason for that. There's a lull every year until about 30 days before the draft. Now the coaches get involved. Prior to that, it's the scouts, it's the roadies that are filling out the paper work. Now the coaches get involved. Now team owners get involved. Now general managers get involved. So you're starting to see, in my opinion, Winston's stock starting to slide a little bit and Mariota's stock starting to go up a little bit."
Jaworski also addressed the talks surrounding Eagles coach Chip Kelly and Mariota.
"I'll give you a little bit of information on how much Chip Kelly loves Marcus Mariota," Jaworski said. "This is the time of year when everyone talks, and I talk to General Managers, I've talked to player personnel directors, and I've heard it from a couple or three people that have had conversations with Chip Kelly, and Chip Kelly said, 'Marcus Mariota will win multiple Super Bowls in the National Football League.'"
He added, "Now, he didn't say it was going to be in Philadelphia, but that's how much he loves this guy, and a lot of people feel the same way, that Marcus Mariota is that good that you can win multiple Super Bowls with him as your quarterback."
Mariota has reportedly met with the Bucs and had visits scheduled with the Redskins, Bears and Rams.
For weeks now, the rumors claimed that the Bucs are picking quarterback Jameis Winston from Florida State. Now, with this new report surfacing, many are speculating on which team would select Winston, who has a meeting with the Bears on Wednesday.
ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reported that the New York Jets could consider trading up in order to be able to land Winston.
Cimini wrote, "There is virtually no chance Winston falls to the Jets, who own the sixth pick, but he's highly regarded within the Jets' organization. Aggressive general manager Mike Maccagnan hasn't ruled out the possibility of trading up, sources said, although it's unclear how high he's willing to go or which player he'd be targeting. The cost to move to No. 1 or No. 2 will be enormous, but there's a sense among teams in the top 10 that the Jets are a threat to move up."
Ahead of the Jets and after the Bucs are the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins.
The draft will take place between April 30 and May 2.
