Passengers on board a boat miles off the coast of Mexico could not believe their eyes when they spotted a man floating in a polystyrene box.

Raymundo Rodriguez Noyola, 43, was found shouting at the top of his lungs and waving his arms for help as a yacht came to pick up the shipwrecked fisherman.

In incredible footage, the man is seen holding up the carcass of the dead bird before he tells the rescue crew about his near death experience.

The fisherman was left stranded for eight days after his boat was swamped by the tropical storm, Polo, killing his 69-year-old colleague, Mario Morales Mayo.

Raymundo Rodriguez Noyola, managed to survive extreme thirst and hunger after grabbing a seagull that landed on the box, probably attracted by the smell of fish.

He said: "I think he thought I was dead, and landed to see if there was any pickings."

After being rescued six miles off Isla de la Roqueta, Mexico, he explained to the crew that he ate the whole bird.

He also added that he ate three other smaller birds and a turtle.

The pictures of the rescue were taken by Nai Vazquez, who said it took place six nautical miles southwest of Isla de la Roqueta, part of the central Mexican state of Guerrero, and 10 km from the city Acapulco.

The rescue boat's captain, Roberto Odis Vazquez, said: "He was delirious so we turned round and brought him back to shore immediately."
