'Cinderella' to Dominate Weekend Box Office, What Critics Think of the Modern Twist
Disney's "Cinderella" reboot is slated to dominate over the weekend box office with an estimated $70 million in ticket sales, pushing last weekend's winner into second place.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh, "Cinderella" has been earning stellar reviews from critics in Hollywood.
The new Disney movie stars Lily James as the Cinderella princess, with Richard Madden ("Game of Thrones") as her prince and Cate Blanchett in the notorious stepmother role.
Topping last week's box office was Neill Blomkamp's robot pic "Chappie," which earned $13 million. This weekend will likely see its numbers dip below $10 million.
British actress Lily James believes it's a modern twist on a classic tale, according to an interview she had with the OurWindsor.
"I think that within that structure of keeping it within a fairy tale context, she is in charge of her own destiny and that means she is a heroine," said James.
Cinderella doesn't leave because it's her home and she wants to protect it and the work provided distraction from her grief, James explained.
James said she wanted to convey Cinderella's "courage and kindness and inner strength" with her portrayal of the storybook character as she copes with difficulties.
"She can get through life on her own terms, despite the fact she is staying (in the house) and find joy in her life," said James.
