Philadelphia Eagles Update: Frank Gore to replace LeSean McCoy
The Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly sign free agent Frank Gore this week, league sources reported.
According to the sources, the contract will be three years with $7.5 million guaranteed in the first two years. The final deal is expected to be less than half of what it would have cost the Eagles to keep running back LeSean McCoy, who will be headed to the Buffalo Bills. USA TODAY Sports reported that Gore will fit in well with Eagles coach Chip Kelly's offence.
Jim Corbett wrote, "He is a rugged, durable fit for Kelly's up-tempo, zone-blocked run scheme as a one-cut, downhill between-the-tackles runner with a low center of gravity that makes him tough to tackle as he hugs his blockers.... Gore will make a good tandem back with third-down back Darren Sproles to ease his workload."
Gore, who will turn 32 in May, has been a consistently good running back. In his past eight out of nine seasons, Gore has rushed more than 1,000 yards. He is just coming off of his fourth consecutive season rushing at least 1,000 yards. The five-time Pro Bowler is also considered to be a great pass protector.
Gore was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2005. Gore needs 927 yards in order to become the 15th running back to ever reach 12,000.
"He's kind of one of the outliers in running backs once they get over 30 because some guys are just special," said former NFL scout and ESPN analyst, Louis Riddick. "Frank Gore is not a special athlete, but he's a special player and he's a special teammate. If I was running a team and I needed that kind of running back, Frank Gore is someone I'd be talking to. I'm a big fan."
The market for running backs has been picking up. Teams have shown their willingness to pay for veteran backs, such as McCoy, Marshawn Lynch, Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram.
The Eagles will also reportedly sign free-agent cornerback Byron Maxwell, ESPN.com's Josina Anderson stated. Sources claim that Maxwell's deal is worth $63 million over six years with a $25 million guarantee.
Maxwell, 27, played in 13 regular-season games last year with the Seattle Seahawks. Against him, the average opposing quarterbacks' passer rating was only 81.1. He finished with two interceptions and played both at the outside corner and at nickelback.
"The Seahawks knew Maxwell, regarded as maybe the top unrestricted free-agent cornerback available this year, would get major interest. And while it's thought the Seahawks made a significant offer to Maxwell, Seattle couldn't come close to the package put forth by the Eagles and stay in line with its overall salary cap plan for the next year, which includes extending the deals of quarterback Russell Wilson and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner," Bob Condotta with the Seattle Times wrote.
Maxwell was drafted by the Seahawks in 2011.
