Ikea's New Furnitures Will Charge Your Smartphones Wirelessly

Ikea is introducing new range of furnitures that will charge your smartphones and tablets wirelessly.

The new line of desks, lamps and tablets will be debuting first in U.S. and U.K and the pieces start at $45. The Swedish purveyor of do-it-yourself home decor added that it will also sell a kit that will allow its customers to add a wireless charging spot to existing furniture.

Ikea will use the Qi wireless charging standard, which is one of the many competitors in the wireless charging landscape. Among others, there is the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) present in stores like Starbucks and McDonald's. Another standard, Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) is expected to merge with PMA later this year. The newly launched Samsung Galaxy S6 supports both standard.

"Our belief is that mobile phones are vital parts to people's lives at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered," said Bjorn Block, Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, at IKEA. "As a member of WPC, we value the access to the leading and most advanced global standard for wireless charging."

According to the official announcement, the wireless home furnishing by Ikea will be available starting April this year.
