Adrian Peterson, the Vikings' star running back was charged in a child injury case and detained in jail for some time early Saturday morning, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. Brady Fitzgerald of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirmed to NFL that a warrant had been issued for Peterson's arrest.

The City of Houston Police Department was informed of a complaint of child endangerment, and Houston referred it to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, reports NFL.com.

He was indicted by a grand jury on charges of beating his 4-year-old son with a switch or a thin tree branch causing him serious harm. The incident happened in May and Minnesota authorities started an investigation when his mother took him to a doctor for a routine visit after he returned from his father's home. The doctor ruled the injuries to be serious enough to be counted as abuse, reports the Washington Post.

Peterson had told the boy's mother that he had given his son a "whooping".

Peterson was booked by the jail authorities and released on a $15,000 bond, according to NFL.com.

The Vikings announced that Peterson will not play Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

"The Vikings are in the process of gathering information regarding the legal situation involving Adrian Peterson. At this time, we will defer further questions to× Adrian's attorney Rusty Hardin," the Vikings said in a statement.

The NFL is facing a second controversy in recent weeks concerning its players. NFL recently indefinitely suspended Baltimore Ravens three-time Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice for domestic violence.
