Giancarlo Stanton released from hospital after being hit in the face with pitch; Brewers and Marlins benches clear
Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton suffered multiple facial fractures, dental damage and a facial laceration after being hit in the face with a pitch by Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Mike Fiers, according to the Marlins website.
Following the hit by pitch Stanton laid on the ground for several moments while a stretcher was brought to take him off the field.
Manager Mike Redmond believes the 24-year old superstar - who was batting .287 with 37 homeruns and 105 RBIs - will be out for the season. Per the Associated Press, Stanton received stitches and was released from the hospital Friday morning. The AP also reports surgery may not be necessary.
Following the hit-by-pitch, things only got worse in the Marlins and Brewers game. Reed Johnson came into the game to bat for Stanton who had technically swung on the HBP. Therefore, if he had not been taken out of the game he would have still been at the plate. On the first pitch Johnson saw - also known as the very next pitch Fiers threw after hitting Stanton - Fiers hit Johnson on the hand. From there, the benches cleared and both Redmond and Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee were ejected. The umpires said Johnson swung and missed on the pitch which meant Johnson was out on strikes.
In the sixth inning Marlins reliever Anthony DeSclafani was tossed after he hit Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez with a pitch. The Marlins lost the game to the Brewers 4-2.
After the game, Fiers sent out a tweet to Stanton:
"I am deeply sorry about what happened tonight. I can't imagine what you and your family are going through. ... my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I feel horrible and hope for a speedy recovery."
Stanton sent out a tweet thanking everyone for their support:
The amount of support I have received from you guys has been tremendous & Heartfelt. I'm much better today & deeply appreciate your prayers!
