Ohio Man Sleepwalks Over 60 Ft. High Cliff
An Ohio man fell off a 60 ft. high cliff while sleepwalking in Kentucky's national forest, but escaped with only minor injuries, officials said Wednesday.
Ryan Campbell, 27, was on a camping trip with his friends in Daniel Boone National Forest's northern part, to be specific Grays Arch Trail in Kentucky's Red River Gorge. Early last Thursday, while sleepwalking a few yards from the hammock where he was spending the night, Ryan fell off the cliff.
He said that as soon as he landed he thought he was going to die, ABC News reports. "I was sure I was dead, or at least severely messed up. You don't think you're going to fall that far and walk away from it," Campbell said.
After an hour of having fallen asleep, Campbell began sleepwalking. His friends were awake and witnessed the entire episode. They said they watched in horror as he stepped out in an unconscious state, BBC reports.
He fell on a bush due to which he did not sustain major injuries.
The rescue team took three hours to reach the venue.
"He had facial trauma and a head laceration, but his mood was very good. He was responding to our instructions," said John May, of the Wolfe County search-and-rescue unit and one of the first responders to reach Campbell.
May further said that in the past he has responded to falls where the person fell 160 feet and survived or fell 30 feet and died, Reuters reports.
"I'm not going to put myself in a position to have that happen again," said Campbell, who is expected to make a full recovery.
