Chicago Bulls Update: Derrick Rose to Undergo Knee Surgery, Season in Jeopardy
Derrick Rose will be making his third comeback to the league next year after suffering a season-ending injury once again.
The Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday that an MRI exam revealed a medial meniscus tear in Rose's right knee. Rose, 26, will have to undergo surgery. His return timeline will be dependent on how the procedure goes.
Sources are reporting that Rose's most recent tear is not as serious as the one he had in the same knee back in November 2013. For that operation, the physician and Rose had decided to fix the meniscus instead of removing it, which required a longer recovery period. It is unclear which procedure will be done for this upcoming surgery.
The Bulls and Rose are not sure when the injury occurred. Rose played against the Milwaukee Bucks Monday night and shot only 1-for-13. The Bulls won that game 87-71. On Tuesday, Rose had to skip his light workout at the Advocate Center due to right knee soreness. The team and Rose discovered the injury later on that day.
"I feel so bad for DRose," former Bull Jamal Crawford tweeted. "One of the most genuine superstars out there."
"Man feel bad for D.Rose! Keep your head up homie and stay strong G!" Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James tweeted.
"I was speechless," Oklahoma City Thunder Russell Westbrook said on NBA-TV. "It's so tough for a guy like that who plays so hard and has to go through it again and again and again."
Rose was averaging 18.4 points and 5.0 assists in 31 minutes. The Bulls will have to rely on point guards Kirk Hinrich and Aaron Brooks. They will most likely sign another guard to fill their open roster spot.
Rose is due $20 million next season and $21.3 million for the 2016-17 season.
The Bulls (36-21) are currently ranked third in the Eastern Conference.
