Newest Pebble smartwatch - Pebble Time - has broken Internet sales record by raising more than $1 million in less than an hour.

Silicon Valley-based company Pebble had set a funding target of $US500,000 for its 31-day campaign but keen smartwatch investors reached that target in just 32 minutes.

In the first hour, Pebble's new watch doubled its target and by six-hour mark, Internet users had spent more than $US5.5 million ordering the yet-to-be-released smartwatch.

New Pebble Watch Features

The new smartwatch is based on the success of the original Pebble smartwatch but it adds some key features aimed at improving the user experience. For the first time, the smartwatch will feature a color display. It will be 20 percent thinner than its predecessor and will have the same 7-day batter life. It also has a microphone included, which lets users dictate responses to text messages and emails and save voice notes.

New Pebble Watch Price

Backers can per-order Pebble time for $159 through the completed Early Bird promo, and currently goes for $179 apiece.

"A lot can happen in six hours. You can fly from New York City to San Francisco. You can watch The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Or, if you're the Pebble team, you can announce your new smartwatch and raise $5 million," wrote Michael C Stewart on Kickstarter's official blog.

In a half day, Pebble sold about 40,000 smartwatches. Apple, on the other hand, is expected to sell 20 million smartwatches this year.
