As expected, Pebble announced a new version of its smartwatch on Tuesday. The new smartwatch - dubbed Pebble time - for the first time sports a color (e-paper) screen.

Defending the preference of e-paper screen over LCD, OLED displays, Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky said sticking with e-paper allowed the smartwatch to maintain certain key features, such as always displaying time and remaining visible under direct sunlight.

"They seem a lot like smartphones on your wrist, but they don't really make for useful watches," said Migicovsky of rival smartwatches that have launched since Pebble, according to USA Today. "We knew that before we did anything, we had to make a really damn good watch."

Migicovsky added Pebble Time's color screen also won't hurt battery life and noted that it boasted the same 7-day life as the original Pebble and Pebble Steel.

Pebble Time is 20% thinner than the original Pebble, and includes a quick-release mechanism to quickly change watch bands.

"We've tried to build something that's intensely reliable and consistent," added Migicovsky of the microphone. "We didn't want to make something that you speak into and it has to guess what you're saying, or it gets it wrong and you have to constantly repeat yourself, because at the end of the day, you might as well pull out your phone at that point."

According to reports, Pebble time will also feature a revamped software interface the organizes information including notifications, weather, news, travel and reminders chronologically. The new smartwatch, like previous versions, is compatible with both iOS and Android.
