11 Wesleyan Students Hospitalized After Overdosing on Club Drug Molly
Eleven students at a prestigious liberal arts college have been hospitalized after consuming a tainted batch of the party drug known as "molly".
The Hartford Courant reports that two of the 11 students are currently in critical condition and the police in Middletown, CT, have opened an investigation into the matter. The two critically ill students were in such bad shape that they had to be airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
It appears as though all of those who became ill consumed the drugs sometime during the night of Feb. 21. It is not clear where they got the drugs, or if they consumed them all together at the same place.
The Courant reports that three of the ill students resided in one dorm complex and four students in another while at least one of the sick students resided off campus.
NBC Connecticut reports that the school has notified the parents of all the students who have fallen ill. The university has also asked that students check in on their friends to make sure that if they did take any molly over the weekend, they are ok.
Molly is the street name for MDMA, which is one of the active ingredients in the club drug Ecstasy. While there normally are other drugs present in most Ecstasy tablets, the euphoria associated with the drug is caused primarily by MDMA.
The drug typically lasts from four to six hours, with users often taking a second dose as the first begins to wear off.
Molly was previously prized in the club scene because it was stronger and more concentrated MDMA in relation to traditional ecstasy. The drug became increasingly popular in the later 2000's, appearing in the raps and songs of artists as diverse as Lil' Wayne and Miley Cyrus.
