Scotland Independence Movement: Survey Reveals "Yes" Vote Ahead
Backing the recent surge in support for the independence movement in Scotland, YouGov Polls Sunday revealed that the pro-independence campaign is ahead with 51 percent compared to 49 percen of nayayers. This is the first time that any survey has put the "Yes" vote ahead, CNN reports.
Less than two weeks are left for the Scotland referendum and this revelation, at this point, has only alarmed the United Kingdom. The UK has already offered Scotland greater autonomy, which includes more tax powers, spending powers, and control over the welfare state.
George Osborne, a British Conservative Party politician, who is the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Second Lord of the Treasury, while promising fresh powers to Scotland if it rejects independence in this month's referendum also stated that in case the union dissolves, Britain will not share the pound.
The result of the YouGov poll is significant as it shows a major turnaround from last month's survey outcome, when it was reported that the Better Together campaign was ahead by 22 points. The "Yes" vote has increased by four points this week, with the "No" plunging by the same, The Independent reports.
"A two-point gap is too small for us to call the outcome. But, the fact that the contest is too close to call is itself remarkable, as Better Together seemed to have victory in the bag," YouGov President Peter Kellner wrote in his blog.
Activists on both sides are intensifying their efforts ahead of a historic referendum on September 18. The victory of the "Yes" side would mean that Scotland would split from the rest of the United Kingdom - England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
"The Yes campaign has not just invaded No territory; it has launched a blitzkrieg," Kellner added.
