Buffalo Bills Rumors: Attempting to Sign QB Josh McCown
Head coach Rex Ryan is wasting no time in finding a quality quarterback.
The Buffalo Bills are reportedly trying to sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown, ESPN.com's Adam Schefter and Mike Rodak reported.
According to the reports, the 35-year-old, who was released into free agency last week, is headed to Buffalo, New York on Monday with the goal of negotiating and potentially agreeing on a contract. If McCown does not like the contract the Bills put forth, he is expected to visit several other teams. McCown did not name the teams that were interested in him. However, many speculate that the other teams could be the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns.
The Bills currently have quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel on their roster and desperately need to add more depth. The Bills lost veteran, Kyle Orton, who retired unexpectedly at the end of the season.
Last season, McCown was one of the most sought after quarterbacks on the free agent market. However, after a disappointing and underwhelming 2014 season, the Buccaneers decided against keeping him.
McCown started 11 games this past season. He competed 56.3 percent of his passes, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a 70.5 quarterback rating. Since entering the league in 2002, McCown has played for eight teams, which include the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears and the Buccaneers.
McCown's best season was in 2013 with the Bears when he started five games in place of Jay Cutler. He recorded 13 touchdowns and only one interception. His quarterback rating was 109.0.
McCown has never played a full, 16-game season in his NFL career.
The 2015 league year and free agency period/trading period starts on March 10 at 4 p.m. ET.
