Phoenix Suns Trade Rumors: Rockets Eyeing Goran Dragic
The Houston Rockets are reportedly pushing for a trade with the Phoenix Suns, league sources reported. According to the sources, the Rockets have been eyeing guard Goran Dragic and are hoping that the Suns will be willing to part ways with their star before the trade deadline.
During this season, the Rockets, who play in the extremely competitive western conference, have made several moves to strengthen their lineup. They have added Josh Smith, who has been very strong coming off of the bench and Corey Brewer. However, the Rockets are reportedly convinced that making at least one more move is necessary.
Regardless of the Rockets' attempts, the Suns have not engaged in trade talks regarding the guard. Reports claim that the Suns have been trying all season to convince Dragic to re-sign with them in July. The Suns would be pressured to look at trade options if they believe that Dragic will test the free-agent market.
Last month, Dragic hinted that he would consider all NBA teams during free agency. Dragic will become a free agent if he declines his $7.5 million player option.
"Every team in the NBA is an option to me, because it is a privilege to play for any team in the NBA. When the time comes, I'm going to sit down with my family and my agent and try to make the best decision for myself," Dragic had said to the Houston Chronicle. "Right now, I'm so focused to play those 38 games left of the regular season and hopefully we're going to make the playoffs. Right now is no time to think about the free agency because I want to be focused. I want to help my teammates."
He added, "I feel like home is Phoenix. They give me everything. They bring me into the league. I have a lot of friends here, a lot of family. But that doesn't mean anything, because I need to look at my career. We'll see what is going to happen."
The 28-year-old is currently in his second season with the Suns. Dragic failed to sign with the Rockets in free agency back in July 2012. Dragic is averaging 16.2 points and 4.1 assists in 33.4 minutes this season.
The Suns have a very deep backcourt and could trade Dragic. Last summer, the Suns resigned Eric Bledsoe to a five-year deal worth $70 million and added Isaiah Thomas, who signed a three-year, $27 million deal. The Suns general manager Ryan McDonough recently added that the team needs re-balancing.
"I think our roster balance is a little off and that's my fault," McDonough told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM this week. "We are a little too backcourt-heavy, especially in terms of guys who, you know, I think you'd define primarily as scorers in the backcourt. So I think at some point we'll need to balance that out, try to get a little more size, a little more frontcourt scoring and rebounding."
The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly want Dragic as well. Rumors claim that the Lakers will offer Dragic a max four-year contract this summer worth around $80 million.
The trade deadline is Feb 19.
