Google is reportedly working with payment company Square on its own high-tech, credit-card-free system to rival Apple Pay. The system as a result of collaboration is in testing since fall.

The system, reportedly called Plaso, would let Android users speak their initials to pay at the participating stores, according to The Information. The report cites four people who have been involved with the product or were briefed on it.

According to the report, the participating retailers could be Papa John's Pizza and Panera Bread Co.

Apple Pay launched in October has tasted some early success. The payment system works with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and allows users to make point-of-sale purchases with their phones, using information from their existing credit and debit card accounts.

Apple Pay would also work with the upcoming Apple Watch.

Google tried making a payment system with Google Wallet in 2011 but it failed to catch on with retailers and consumers.

Square has also plans to begin accepting Apple Pay sometime this year but reportedly, Square founder Jack Dorsey is also working on an Android-based tablet of its own that would replace the iPads used by Square registers in many small businesses.
