The second Spider-Man movie franchise will be cut short. After Sony and Disney announced their new partnership, which will add Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, any prospects of a third Amazing Spider-Man movie happening died.

When Sony created the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, the corporation had envisioned several sequels and spinoffs, including "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 4." However, the second movie in the franchise debuted to poor box office numbers.

Scott Meslow writes in The Week, "The Amazing Spider-Man is dead, doomed to live on as a bizarre, half-forgotten curiosity in Spider-Man lore, sandwiched between Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy and Spider-Man's triumphant return to the Marvel stable. When it comes to superhero blockbusters, two movies is not a franchise; it's a failure."

Due to the poor reception, Sony has decided to cut "The Amazing Spider-Man" series short and will focus on uniting Spider-Man with other superheroes. The web-slinging superhero will be featured in an upcoming 2016 Marvels movie and in 2017, Spider-Man will also return in a stand-alone film. There is currently no word on who will play Spider-Man. Many believe that Garfield will not reprise this role.

"We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy [Pascal], who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.

According to Variety, the 2017 movie, which will start Sony's next Spider-Man franchise, will reportedly be focused on Spider-Man's high school years. Younger actors that have been linked to this movie include Dylan O'Brien from "The Maze Runner" and Logan Lerman from "Fury."

Sony has not announced which Spider-Man character, Parker or the half-Black half-Hispanic Miles Morales, would appear in these movies.
