A young Russian woman has died after dropping her charging iPhone into the water while she was taking a bath.

Evgenia Sviridenko, 24,  was killed by electric current when her iPhone came into contact with water while it was charging. The tragic incident happened on Monday, January 9 2015, in the southeastern part of Moscow.

According to reports, the girl took iPhone into the bathroom to check her page on the Russian social network "VKontakte."

The woman's body was discovered by her roommate who called for an ambulance immediately and told the team of doctors exactly what had happened.

"I noticed that she had been gone a while, and when I couldn't raise her I opened the door and saw her floating on the water looking pale," said her roommate Yaroslav Dubinina, 23, according to the Mirror.

"I saw her phone which was on charge at the bottom of the bath. Her body was still shaking from the shock."

Police are investigating why the charger did not cut out and would not reveal whether it was a licensed Apple product.

Police are now investigating why the phone charger did not apparently cut out and refused to reveal whether it was a licensed Apple product or not.

A regional Investigative Committee spokesperson said initial tests had suggested the girl died from an electric shock but that the investigation was ongoing.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened. In August, Chinese media reported that a teenager was electrocuted by her iPhone after it was plugged into an unofficial charger.
