Nikon Launches New Full-Frame Camera Aimed At Astrophotographers

Nikon has announced the D810A, a revamped variant of its 36-megapixel D810 DSLR, aimed at astrophotographers. The new camera will let users snap stellar pictures of the star-studded nighttime skies.

The new Nikon D810A is the first full-frame camera designed especially for astrophotographers. The camera unlike other DSLRs has been designed to capture the red hues emitted by heavenly bodies, such as the Red Square Nebula for instance.

The D810A sports an infrared cut filter that allows the transmission of hydrogen-alpha wavelength that is responsible for the red hues coming from celestial bodies.

"When shooting under light sources with a significant amount of near-infrared wavelengths or capturing common subjects exhibiting high reflectance at near-infrared wavelengths, resulting images may exhibit an unusually red cast," Nikon said in a statement. "Because an appropriate color reproduction cannot be obtained, this model is not recommended for general photography."

The new DSLR also comes with a handful of accessories such as remote cord for remote shutter release.

Availability and Pricing of the Nikon D810A

The Nikon D810A will be available by late May 2015. Although there's no word on the pricing yet, it's expected to cost $3,800.
