The most attractive accent in the world is British, says a poll of 11,000 in 24 cities. More than a quarter of respondents preferred a UK accent with people in Paris, New York and Sydney the keenest of them all, discovered The Time Out Global Dating Survey, according to independent.co.uk. The British accent was chosen as the most attractive by 26.7 per cent of people answering a global survey of 11,000 in 24 cities.

The British accent was selected over an American one, followed by Irish and Australian accents. The French accent, once labelled the "language of love", was placed in the fifth place, chosen as the sexiest accent by just 7.7 per cent of respondents, according to dailymail.co.uk.

However, the survey did not indicate what kind of British accent was best.

Among other surveys, Paris can console itself that it is considered the most romantic city, or at least one with the "best dating scene", much ahead of Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and Chicago. London, though, was sixth in the list.

More surveys revealed some hidden secrets of dating couples. About 58 per cent of people said that they checked up on a date on the social media before they met them. While more than half the respondents kissed on the first date, one in 10 confessed that sex on a first date was acceptable.

While the average number of dates before the couple had sex was 3.5, nine dates were needed before most of the respondents could be comfortable with the label of a couple.

While 31 per cent of singles in Sydney claimed that they felt "proud to be so," some 45 per cent of the singles in New York admitted to feeling unhappy about being single.

When asked to give their comments on the dating scene in their city, respondents in Kabul, Afghanistan, confessed that the best thing about it was that there were "infinitely more men than women due to an overabundance of military and security personnel".

To the question in Bogota, Colombia, people reported that "the guys are ugly and girls very beautiful. It's difficult," was their comment.
