When it comes to durable and scratch-resistant glass for smartphones, nothing comes close to Corning's Gorilla glasses. From iPhones to Samsung's Galaxy phones, majority of high-end smartphones use Gorilla Glass and now the company is releasing more tougher glass material - Gorilla Glass 4.

The new generation of scratch resistant glasses - also called Project Phire - will find home on larger number of smart screens including wearables.

Reportedly, the Project Phire glass would be the most indestructible glass ever to be placed on a smartphone.

"We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn't fare well when dropped," said James P. Clappin, president of Corning Glass Technologies, in a statement. "So, we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire."

"2015 will be all about large-size LCD TVs," Clappin added. "This segment of the display industry grew more than 50% year over year on a unit basis in 2014, and our analysis shows that the average TV screen size is growing more than 1 inch per year. Importantly, every inch in screen-size growth equates to about 150 million square feet of additional glass demand."
