NY Knicks Rumors: Amar’e Stoudemire could ask for a Buyout
The New York Knicks have not been able to come back from a terrible start this season. With their focus already shifting to next season, rumors are circulating that Amar'e Stoudemire might be on his way out.
Stoudemire, who is currently in the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract, which expires on July 1, could ask Knicks president Phil Jackson for a buyout. Stoudemire's $23.4 million salary would be difficult to trade.
"It's not an easy decision to make," Stoudemire told Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports. "Over time, we will see how things pan out. You give yourself a break during the All-Star break. You think about it with your family. ...That will give me a good solid week on how to weigh out the rest of the season."
Stoudemire, 32, is averaging 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in 24.9 minutes this season. He is shooting 55 percent from the field and has only played in 32 games. His career numbers, over 13 seasons, are 20.1 points and 8.2 rebounds. The six-time All-Star has been riddled with knee, wrist and ankle injuries.
Although his health is unpredictable, Stoudemire would still be a desirable add on for many teams. Spears noted that the Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers have stated that the organization would be interested in acquiring players from the buyout market. The Dallas Mavericks and the Portland Trailblazers are also reportedly looking to add a big man.
Stoudemire, who is a favorite in New York, could also re-sign with the Knicks at the end of the season.
"My heart always lies with the Knicks. My loyalty is with [Knicks owner] Mr. [Jim] Dolan. I feel like New York is my home now. I feel like I'm a New Yorker for sure. I have a farm here. I have family and friends here. New York will always be my home whether I am here playing for the Knicks or not," Stoudemire said.
The Knicks are currently 10-39.
