China Accuses Britain of Interference in Hong Kong
China has blamed Britain of meddling in the affairs of Hong Kong.
The accusation comes in the backdrop of the ongoing protests in Hong Kong by thousands of activists after China declared it will limit democratic freedom and said it will decide who can contest for the city's top post in the 2017 elections, reports The Independent.
China's Parliament on Sunday rejected pro-democracy activists' demand to be allowed to choose Hong Kong's next leader in 2017.
Britain had declared earlier this year that it would conduct an investigation in July to evaluate the progress made by Hong Kong in the 30 years since the handover agreement with Britain.
The starting of the inquiry amid the protests in Hong Kong has irritated the Chinese officials prompting them to send a letter to the British Foreign Affairs Committee..
In the letter the Chinese Foreign Affairs Committee has accused the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee of Britain of indulging in extremely inappropriate action amounting to interference in China's internal matters, reports BBC.
The Chinese Committee also said that Britain sent a wrong political message to the world, and it had interrupted the reforms which were proposed in Hong Kong.
China will not allow any direct or indirect interference from Britain or any other country, the Committee further said in the letter.
Commons Foreign Affairs Committee' Chairman Richard Ottaway said that he did not want to annoy the Chinese though he wanted them to comprehend the style of functioning of the British.
Ottaway said that no offense was taken based on the letter and said that both the committees have to do their jobs.
"It may well be that my committee will decide that actually the Chinese are behaving perfectly reasonably," he said.
However, he added that if it was true that China was choosing a limited number of candidates for elections, then it had violated the 1984 handover agreement, reports BBC.
