Dallas Mavericks Lose Rajon Rondo to Head Injury [VIDEO]
The Dallas Mavericks, who are sixth in the Western Conference, will lose Rajon Rondo for at least one week due to a head injury.
Rondo and teammate Richard Jefferson collided within the first few minutes of Saturday's game against the Orlando Magic. Rondo had tripped and fallen in front of Jefferson, who then accidentally kneed him right in the face. Rondo, whose nose started bleeding, left the game. The Mavericks ended up winning 108-93.
"Things like that happen in basketball," Jefferson said according to Foxsports.com. "But you never like to see that collateral damage happen."
"I saw the replay it looked completely ugly," Dirk Nowitzki said on Saturday. "But [Rondo] is a tough kid, so the docs will check him out and then we'll go from there. But that was as hard of a hit as I've seen in this league."
Rondo suffered an orbital fracture to his left eye as well as a nasal fracture. Although there are no reports on whether or not he will need surgery, the Mavericks will surely lose out with him on the sidelines.
James Herbert, NBA writer with CBSSports.com, wrote: "Since acquiring Rondo, the Mavs are outscoring opponents by 7.3 points per 100 possessions with him on the court, and only 3.8 points per 100 possessions with him on the bench, per NBA.com. That's because their defensive rating goes from a stingy 98.7 points per 100 possessions when he's out there to a mediocre 103.3 per 100 when he's not. Rondo can defend both guard positions, and there isn't a traditional 2-guard on the roster. Dallas is likely going to take a step back defensively without him, and it could be a significant one."
Rondo was traded to the Mavericks in December. He is averaging 9.7 points, 6.9 assists and 5.3 rebounds with the Mavs.
