Facebook's New "Place Tips" Offers Location Based Recommendations
Facebook has launched a new feature for iOS users - Place Tips - that would offer location-based recommendations, like Yelp and Foursquare. After enabling the feature, it will pop up relevant content about your location as long as you're there.
Place Tips will specifically show posts and photos of the place from your friends if they've also visited - eerily similar to Foursquare's Tips.
"You'll know Place Tips is working if you see a "tip" notification for the place that you're at when you launch Facebook. Tap it, and it'll show a series of cards about the place. Not only will you see the aforementioned posts and photos from your friends, but you'll also see basic info about the business. That info includes details like its operating hours, posts from its Facebook Page if it has one, popular menu items and upcoming events. Facebook was careful to note that tapping on these tips won't post anything to your news feed or show anyone where you are," Engadget notes.
The Place Tips feature is opt-out, which means you can disable it if you want given that the Facebook needs permission to access your location - which it determines with a combination of Wi-Fi, GPS and cellular networks.
The social network biggie also seems to be working on its very own Bluetooth beacons, which it is currently distributing to few New York businesses and landmarks and will soon start testing the same, according to KollyTalk.
