LA Lakers Trade Rumors: Is Kobe's Time in LA Over?
The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a huge blow when Kobe Bryant sustained a right rotator cuff injury on January 21.
Test results revealed that the All-Star would have to undergo surgery. The recovery time, which was initially thought to be around six months, has increased to nine months, according to the team's statement. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, one of Bryant's doctors, added, "I expect Kobe to make a full recovery and if all goes as expected, he should be ready for the start of the season."
With the combination of the injuries, old age and the long recovery period, rumors about Bryant leaving Los Angeles quickly surfaced. However, according to several sources, Bryant will be staying put.
Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times tweeted, "Those around Kobe say he is definitively coming back to play next season. Doesn't want to go out like this." Bresnahan added, "Source: Kobe will also be active in free-agent recruiting for the Lakers, including pitches to possible future teammates in July."
Head coach Byron Scott spoke on the matter as well stating that he does not believe that this injury is the end for Bryant. According to Baxter Holmes of ESPN.com, Scott said, "In my mind he's coming back next year, unless he tells me something different."
He added, "But I think the biggest thing with Kobe, as long as [the media are] saying that he's done, he's going to come back. I think he proved his point this year that he still has a lot left in the tank. He's still one of the best players in the league."
Bryant is due $25 million in his final year of his two-year extension. During this season, Bryant played in 35 games and averaged 22.3 points.
In the meantime, the 12-34 Lakers will have to rely on someone to step up their game.
