Kinkiest Cities Revealed in US Study

Kink University has answered an important question: which is the kinkiest city in the US? It set out find the solution by looking at BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, and Sadomasochism), fetish and polyamorous communities in the larger US cities.

Kink University is part of a public outreach program that is targeting support for Kink.com to "demystify and celebrate alternative sexuality". The university offers online resources as well as real-life workshops, according to Huffingtonpost.com.

To celebrate the launch of the Kink University, Kink.com says: "It wasn't the old stalwarts that surprised us - we had a pretty good idea that New York and San Francisco would make the list - but the breadth and diversity of our United States of Kink this year did."

Having probed 50 major American cities, it set them into a kind of ranking in order to calculate the kink population. It was assessed by active members on the kink social network, Fetlife, which searched for the percentage of the population that is called kinky. It also looked at the number of kink-aware professionals, including therapists, doctors and lawyers, which were found in the list of its directory, and finally went by the porn sales of its inhabitants, who used information from Kink.com.

There were some more interesting highlights of the search: "Would you have guessed that El Paso has the smallest kinky population of any major American city? Or that in tiny Harrisburg PA, over 10% of the population is identified as kinky? We found thriving kink outposts in Tampa, a thriving dungeon scene in Atlanta, and porn lovers just about everywhere," explains the site.

The kinkiest city in America is Portland, Oregon, which has the biggest number of kinks, at 3.99%. The second city with the largest number was San Francisco, even though it is usually thought to be the hub of kinks in the US. "Rising housing costs resulting from the tech boom seem to have pushed the community northward," Mike Stabile, a spokesperson for Kink University said.
