Deflate-Gate Update: Kraft Demands Apology if No Hard Evidence is Found
The New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft defended his coach and quarterback during Monday's news conference. Kraft stated that he expects an apology from the league if no hard evidence is uncovered.
"If the Wells investigation is not able to definitively determine that our organization tampered with the air pressure on the footballs, I would expect and hope that the league would apologize to our entire team and, in particular, coach [Bill] Belichick and Tom Brady for what they have had to endure this past week," Kraft said.
Attorney Ted Wells is leading the investigation with Jeff Pash, the NFL executive vice president. During the conference, instead of taking questions from the reporters, Kraft addressed how the story gained momentum throughout the week from rumors and supposed media leaks as opposed to facts. Kraft stated that he is "confident that this investigation will uncover whatever the facts were that took place last Sunday and the science of how game balls to react to changes in the environment."
"I am disappointed in the way this entire matter has been handled and reported upon. We expect hard facts as opposed to circumstantial leaked evidence to draw a conclusion of this investigation." Kraft added. "Tom, Bill and I have been together for 15 years. They are my guys. They are part of my family. And Bill, Tom and I have had many difficult discussions over the years, and I have never known them to lie to me. That is why I am confident in saying what I just said, and it bothers me greatly that their reputations and integrity, and by association that of our team, has been called into question this past week."
In the meantime, the league currently has one suspect, a Patriots locker room attendant who reportedly moved the game balls from the officials' locker room to another area before bringing them to the field. FOXSports.com reported that the league has video of the attendant moving the balls and has interviewed him. In the video, it appears that the attendant brought the balls into a bathroom. However, the league has not determined if the attendant tampered with the balls.
The NFL investigation will continue ahead of this Sunday's Super Bowl XLIX.
