Australian Open Update: Berdych Ends 17-Game Losing Streak Against Nadal

Rafael Nadal, a 14-time Grand Slam singles champion, is out of the Australian Open.

In the quarterfinal match against Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic, Nadal barely made a dent during the first two sets. Berdych, the number-seven seed, took advantage of Nadal's slow start and uncharacteristic plays to get the early 6-2, 6-0 lead. Nadal, the number three seed from Spain, has not dropped a set 6-0 since 2006.

In the third set, Nadal started to look more like himself, running balls and getting more accuracy on his forearm. However, it was still not enough to rattle Berdych, who controlled the match on almost every point. Berdych ended up winning the tiebreak, snapping his 17-game losing streak against the Spaniard.

"Oh, it feels great," Berdych, 29, said after his victory. "Everything was working."

"I tested him for one hour, for a set," Nadal said. "For the rest of the thing I didn't test him in general."

Although the crowd was stunned to see Nadal lose, Nadal did not expect to get far in the tournament. Prior to the start of the Australian Open, Nadal stated that his lack of fitness and inactivity due to his injuries would keep him from advancing more than a few rounds in Melbourne.

Before this grand slam, Nadal played only eight tournaments since last June when he sustained a right wrist injury and also underwent appendix surgery.

Berdych will take on number six seed, Andy Murray. Murray defeated the young Australian, Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Earlier that day, number two seed Maria Sharapova took out Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-2. Sharapova will play fellow countrywoman, Ekaterina Makarova, who defeated Simona Halep 6-4, 6-0.
