Court Clears Cop Who Caused 40 Injuries To Mom Tending To Child With Cerebral Palsy
It happened in a British hospital two years ago. A mother, who was taking care of her daughter, was kicked, hit and given over 40 injuries, thanks to Warren Luke, a Metropolitan police officer, who was informed by the hospital staff that she was refusing to leave.
On Thursday, the Wood Green Crown Court cleared him of charges.
The mother, who is not named for legal reasons, had been asked by the hospital to leave. But when she did not follow their orders, four police officers were called, according to rt.com.
The court watched a video that showed the mother explaining her experience: "You've got to leave, you've got to leave,'" she reported Luke as saying. "I kept playing with my daughter and then I saw him moving towards me. He was kicking me and kicking me. He had one hand on my head. When I fell on the bed he grabbed my hair and banged my head. I was screaming. I couldn't defend myself. My ex-husband ran in and shouted, 'why are you kicking my wife?'"
Luke, however, defended himself that the mother's behavior had been "escalating" and her child was under threat from her, according to theguardian.com.
Instead of using a baton or gas, he had struck her on her bicep, along with a "distraction strike" on her face with his boots. He said that his actions had been taught to him through training.
"I did kick out at the left side of her face as trained to do. My footwear was a boot but it's light," he said. "I can't say exactly where and how her injuries were sustained, I can only say what I did," he replied, when queried about her bruises.
The mother told theguardian.com that she had to undergo "plastic surgery" and take a year off to get back to normalcy.
Luke defended his action: "I wouldn't say that I used full force, but I do remember hitting harder because it had no effect. "I used police tactics with good reason that were absolutely necessary. I didn't go too far. Whenever a police officer uses force you need to be accountable for it," he added.
There were some eyewitnesses nearby who were "appalled" at the whole scene. Two more cops who were called to attend to her also gave some evidence. Laura Riley, one of the them, shed tears when she gave evidence while her colleague Mary Clark called it "just horrific."
A Metropolitan Police representative agreed that Luke would undergo a "misconduct review" after the incident.
