Kobe Bryant to Decide on Shoulder Surgery on Monday
Kobe Bryant could be done for the season. According to a source cited by USA TODAY Sports, the Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard will make a decision on Monday regarding his torn right rotator cuff.
In the meantime, the veteran, who was just named an All-Star starter for the West, joked lightly about his condition on Twitter.
Bryant sustained the injury when he went up for a two-handed dunk in the third quarter of Wednesday night's game against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Lakers ended up losing 96-80.
"It felt fine when I went up, didn't feel too good when I came down," Bryant said.
The Lakers released a statement, detailing Bryant's injury. It wrote:
"Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who suffered a torn rotator cuff injury during Wednesday night's game in New Orleans, was examined today in Los Angeles by team physician Dr. Steve Lombardo of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Lombardo confirmed the diagnosis of a torn rotator cuff and discussed options, including the possibility of surgery, with Bryant. Bryant is scheduled to be examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic on Monday, and a decision is expected to be made at that time."
In regards to Bryant's future, Coach Bryan Scott expressed his concerns, stating, "Yeah I'm worried. We all in the organization are worried about it."
Scott added, according to ESPN.com, "This is one of the toughest guys I've ever been around as far as dealing with injuries and things like that and being able to come back. Everybody said he was done after the Achilles and he came back pretty strong. Knowing him the way I know him, I know he doesn't want to go out this way. I think he'll rehab it if that's the case and then we'll have to wait and see."
Bryant has suffered from several ailments throughout the season. He has played in 35 of the 43 games so far and averaged 22.3 points with 5.6 assists per game.
Byrant has one year left on his contract worth $25 million.
