Phillies Trade Rumors: Brewers Interested in Closer Papelbon

The Philadelphia Phillies are very interested in trading their closer, Jonathan Papelbon. According to multiple sources and reports, the Phillies have engaged in serious trade talks with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Phillies reportedly want to dump payroll and trading Papelbon would help significantly. Papelbon signed a four-year contract worth $52 million with the Phillies. He is owed $13 million for this upcoming season. His contract includes a $13 million option for the 2016 season if he completes 48 games this year.

The Brewers recently traded starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo, who was due $13 million this season, to the Texas Rangers.

Due to a no-trade clause, Papelbon can block a trade deal to 17 teams, the Brewers being one of them. However, a source told ESPN.com that the closer would not block this trade if it were to occur. Rumors are that Papelbon would not be interested in staying with a team that is rebuilding.

During last season, the 34-year-old went 2-3 and recorded 39 saves in 43 opportunities while posting a 2.04 ERA. Despite the stellar numbers, Papelbon's personality has caused some issues. Last season, he was suspended for seven games in September for grabbing his crotch after a blown save against the Miami Marlins.

Prior to joining the Phillies, Papelbon was with the Boston Red Sox for seven seasons. In his 10-year career from 2005 to 2014, Papelbon has a 2.37 ERA with 325 saves and 721 strikeouts over 627 1/3 innings.

The Phillies' 73-89 record was the worst in the National League East.
