Dropbox has acquired Israeli mobile productivity startup CloudOn. The startup allows users to edit, create and share files from Microsoft Office and other online and reportedly has nine million registered users.

CloudOn has ceased the new user sign-ups and will be closing down the product for good on March 2015. The 30-person team transitions to working for Dropbox, Techcrunch reported.

"CloudOn's mission of making it easy to work on mobile aligns with Dropbox's goal of giving people the freedom to work the way they want, wherever they want," a Dropbox spokesperson said.

Post acquisition, CloudOn's base in Herzliya will become Dropbox's first office in Israel.

"We're thrilled to continue building things that help people work better - and we're proud and excited to join the Dropbox team to help people be more productive every day," wrote CloudOn's executive team.

After the deal Dropbox will gain document-creation capabilities through CloudOn's technology allowing users to create, review, edit and share Microsoft Office and other files from any platform or device, noted ComputerWorld.

In the past couple of years, Dropbox has acquired a slew of startups such as photo-storage firm Snapjoy, email-management provider Mailbox, mobile-coupon company Endorse, text-editor app Hackpad and photo-sharing app Bubbli.
